The sight glass is the clear window on your multiport valve that lets you monitor water clarity during backwash. When the water running through the sight glass clears up, your backwash is complete. If the glass is cracked or clouded over, you lose this visual reference and end up either wasting water by backwashing too long or stopping too early and leaving dirty sand.
