How to Use Granular Chlorine

For daily chlorination, add the required dose directly to the pool with the pump running. For shock treatment, increase the dose to raise the free chlorine level above 10ppm to kill algae and break down chloramines — the compounds responsible for that strong chlorine smell and eye irritation. Always test your water before dosing and target a free chlorine reading between 1ppm and 3ppm for normal daily levels. Dose in the evening where possible to reduce UV chlorine loss during the day.
Pre-dissolve granular chlorine in a bucket of water before adding to vinyl-lined pools to prevent bleaching of the liner. Never mix chlorine with any other pool chemical, and never add water to chlorine — always add chlorine to water. Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight and other pool chemicals. Keep the lid tightly sealed between uses to prevent moisture absorption.

Dosing Guide

Dosage depends on pool size, water temperature, bather load, and current chlorine levels. As a general guide, 15g per 10,000 litres raises the free chlorine level by approximately 1ppm. For shock treatment, use 30 to 45g per 10,000 litres. Always confirm your levels with a test kit before and after dosing. Pools with heavy use, high temperatures, or direct sun exposure will require more frequent dosing than shaded or lightly used pools.
