The Cordless Robot That Cleans Your Pool For You

No hose. No cable. No pump connection. We take a proper look at the Fairland X60 — the AI robotic cleaner that drops in, maps your pool and does the whole job by itself.

If you’ve ever spent a Saturday morning dragging a manual vacuum across the bottom of your pool, you’ve wondered whether there’s a better way. There is — and the latest generation of robotic cleaners has moved the goalposts entirely. The Fairland X60 is fully cordless, runs off its own battery, and uses AI to map and clean your pool with no input from you. 🎼Aubrey Baardman💎PianoMan🎹 (@aubreybaardman) bought his X60 from us and put it straight to work — and we’ve pulled his clips together below so you can see exactly what it does.

First, What Makes a Robotic Cleaner Different?

It’s easy to lump all automatic cleaners together, but they’re not the same thing, and the differences hit your pocket. Suction cleaners (the familiar “Kreepy Krauly” style) plug into your suction line and are dragged around by your pool pump — cheap to buy, but they make your pump work harder and use more electricity. Pressure cleaners usually need a dedicated booster pump, so more power again.

A robotic cleaner is a different animal entirely: a self-contained unit with its own motors and brushes that scrubs the surfaces, filters the water through its own basket, and doesn’t touch your pool pump at all. The X60 takes this a step further by cutting the cable too — it runs on a rechargeable battery, so there’s nothing trailing into the water and it’s safe to swim while it works.

Why the X60 Suits South African Pools

Beyond not having to do it yourself, there are practical reasons a cordless robot like this works so well locally.

  • It’s completely independent of your pumpThe X60 filters debris into its own 3.2-litre basket, so your sand filter stays cleaner for longer and your pump isn’t dragging a cleaner around all day.
  • It actually scrubs floor, walls and waterlineRotating brushes lift algae and that greasy sunscreen tide-mark off the surfaces — something a passive suction cleaner simply can’t do.
  • It handles our debris loadJacaranda blossoms, autumn leaves, fine dust after a dry Highveld week — the 180-micron filter copes far better than a manual vacuum.
  • It’s cordless, so there’s no tangleNo umbilical cable to knot around your steps, and nothing plugged into a socket near the water while it runs.
  • It sips powerYou’re charging a battery, not running a pump for hours. The running cost is almost nothing — more on that below.

Setting It Up

This is the part people expect to be fiddly with a “smart” gadget. It isn’t. Charge it, connect it, drop it in.

The Clever Part: AI Mapping & App Control

This is what separates the X60 from a cleaner that just bounces around randomly. It builds a picture of your pool and plans an efficient route, and you can manage the whole thing from your phone — start, stop, schedule, and pick a cycle length.

Watch It Clean

Talk is cheap — here’s the bit that matters. The X60 doesn’t just do the floor; it climbs the walls and scrubs the waterline in the same cycle.

The Real Cost Maths

This is where a cordless robot quietly pays for itself. The X60 runs off a 262Wh battery that takes about four hours to charge. A full charge therefore uses roughly 0.26 units of electricity — under R1 a charge at a typical tariff. And one charge isn’t one clean: in floor mode it’ll run for up to six hours, easily several pool cleans on a single charge.

Compare that to driving a suction cleaner with a 1.1 kW pool pump. To get the same coverage you might run that pump an extra two to three hours a day. That’s easily R250–R400 a month in additional electricity, plus the extra wear on your pump and filter.

Rough monthly running cost

Suction cleaner (extra pump hours)~R300+

Illustrative figures based on a ~R3/kWh tariff and typical run times. Your actual cost depends on your municipality, pump size and how often you clean.

Even on conservative numbers, the electricity saving alone offsets a meaningful chunk of the purchase price over a few seasons — before you’ve counted the chemicals saved by keeping the water consistently clean and circulated.

What to Look For — and How the X60 Stacks Up

Not all robotic cleaners are equal, and the cheapest one is rarely the bargain it looks like. Here’s what actually matters, and where the X60 lands on each.

  • Floor only, or floor + walls + waterline?Entry units only do the floor. The X60 climbs the walls and scrubs the waterline where the greasy build-up collects — the whole pool in one cycle.
  • Cordless or corded? The X60 is fully cordless with no caddy, so there’s no cable to tangle and it’s safe to swim while it runs.
  • Battery endurance and charge timeUp to six hours in floor mode (around 3.5 hours in full floor/wall/waterline mode), on a four-hour charge.
  • Smart navigation, not random bouncingThe X60 uses AI mapping to plan an efficient route and avoid obstacles, with 0.5h / 1h / 2h cycle options and full app control.
  • Filter basket you’ll actually emptyA 3.2-litre top-access basket with 180-micron filtration — rinse it out in seconds.
  • Local support and sparesBrushes, tracks and filters wear out. Buy from someone who stocks the consumables and handles the warranty locally — which is exactly what you get from us.

Getting the Most Out of Your X60

It’s low-maintenance, not no-maintenance. A few habits keep it cleaning well for years.

  • Rinse the basket after every cleanA clogged basket means weaker suction and a robot that stops picking up the fine stuff.
  • Charge it properly and store it dryKeep the unit and charger out of the sun and damp. Battery and seals last longer for it.
  • Don’t leave it sitting in the water for daysTake it out between cycles — constant chlorine exposure ages brushes and seals faster.
  • Skim the big stuff firstAfter a storm, net out the leaves before you send it in — it’s built to polish, not to clear a swamp.
And just for fun

The “AI-generated” X60 — PianoMan style

So, Is the X60 Worth It?

For most pool owners, comfortably yes. The upfront cost is real, but between the time you get back, the near-zero running cost versus pump-driven cleaners, and consistently cleaner, healthier water, it earns its keep. The cordless AI design means you genuinely just drop it in and walk away — and because you’re buying it locally from us, the brushes, filters and support are all here when you need them.

Quick Questions

Do I still need my pool pump if I have the X60?

Yes. Your pump and filter handle water circulation and chemical distribution. The X60 handles the scrubbing and debris — different jobs. The bonus is your pump no longer has to drag a cleaner around, so you can often run it for fewer hours.

Is it safe to swim while it’s running?

Yes. Because the X60 is cordless and battery-powered, there’s no mains cable in the water. As with any pool equipment, keep the charger itself dry and away from the splash zone.

Will it work on a fibreglass, marbelite or painted pool?

Yes. The X60 works on all standard pool surfaces — tiles, fibreglass, liner, marbelite and painted concrete. Tell us about your pool and we’ll confirm it’s a good match.

How big a pool can it handle on one charge?

Up to around six hours of floor cleaning on a single charge covers most residential pools comfortably. For full floor, wall and waterline cleaning, runtime is around 3.5 hours — still plenty for a typical pool.

Can I control it from my phone?

Yes. The X60 connects to a dedicated app so you can start, stop and schedule cleaning sessions and get status and maintenance reminders.
