Fibreglass Surface Tissue — 250m Roll

Fibreglass surface tissue is a lightweight, thin glass fibre sheet used as the finishing layer in a fibreglass pool lining system. It goes over the cured chopped strand mat laminate and under the topcoat or gel coat. The tissue creates a smooth surface that hides the coarse texture of the CSM underneath, giving the finished pool a clean, even appearance. Without surface tissue, the weave pattern of the chopped strand mat shows through the topcoat and creates a rough finish.

Why Surface Tissue Matters

The surface tissue serves two purposes. First, it provides a smooth base for the topcoat to sit on. A smooth base means the topcoat goes on evenly and looks professional. Second, the tissue adds a resin-rich layer between the structural laminate and the topcoat. This resin-rich layer improves the waterproofing at the surface and reduces the chance of water tracking along exposed glass fibres in the laminate — a common cause of blistering and delamination in fibreglass pools.

How to Apply

Apply a coat of catalysed polyester resin over the cured CSM laminate. Lay the surface tissue into the wet resin and gently smooth it down with a brush or soft roller. The tissue is delicate, so do not use a ribbed paddle roller as it will tear. Apply just enough resin to saturate the tissue without flooding it. Allow to cure fully before applying topcoat or mosaic gel coat over the top. Overlap each sheet by approximately 25mm for continuous coverage.
