Aqua Max EPDM Pool Solar Panel – 3m x 1.25m
The Aqua Max EPDM pool solar panel uses free sunlight to warm your swimming pool, so you can swim for longer each year without paying for electricity to heat the water. Because the panel is made from black EPDM rubber, it absorbs the sun’s heat quickly and stands up to years of roof exposure. As a result, it is one of the most cost-effective ways to extend your swimming season.
How an EPDM Pool Solar Panel Works
First, your existing pool pump pushes filtered water up to the panels on your roof. Next, the water flows through the panel’s small channels, where the black rubber transfers the sun’s heat into it. Finally, the warmer water returns to the pool. In most systems, a bypass valve sends water through the solar circuit only when you want heat, so you stay in control of the temperature.
Why Choose an EPDM Pool Solar Panel?
- Built for the sun: EPDM is a UV-stable synthetic rubber, so it copes with harsh South African sunshine.
- Lightweight and flexible: In addition, the panel rolls up for transport, which makes DIY installation easier.
- Handles hail: Because rubber flexes on impact, it copes with hail better than rigid panels.
- Repairable: Moreover, small punctures can usually be patched instead of replacing the whole panel.
- No running costs: Once installed, the sun does the heating for free.
How Many Panels Do I Need?
As a general guide, your total panel area should equal 60–100% of your pool’s surface area. For example, in warm coastal areas such as KwaZulu-Natal, 60–80% is usually enough. However, on the Highveld and in the Western Cape, aim closer to 100%, especially if you want to swim early in spring. To find your pool’s surface area, simply multiply its length by its width. Each Aqua Max panel measures 3m x 1.25m, which gives you 3.75m² of collector area. For example, an 8m x 4m pool has a surface area of 32m². At 100% coverage, it therefore needs 9 panels (32 ÷ 3.75 = 8.5, rounded up). At 60%, on the other hand, 6 panels will do. If you are unsure, our team will gladly help you work out the right number of panels.
Installation Tips
- First, mount the panels on a north-facing roof, ideally at a 15–35° pitch.
- Next, lay an Aqua Max solar panel backing sheet under each panel. This is essential, because the panel warranty requires it.
- Then join the panels with Aqua Max EPDM solar connectors.
- After that, fit a non-return valve and a vacuum release valve, so the panels drain properly when the pump stops.
- Next, install a bypass valve to control when water flows through the solar circuit.
- Finally, cover the pool at night. In fact, a good pool solar blanket can cut overnight heat loss by 50–70%.
