Aqua Max Pool Filter Sand – 40kg Silica Sand

Aqua Max pool filter sand is graded silica sand for swimming pool sand filters. As pool water flows through the sand bed, the sharp-edged grains trap dirt, debris and fine particles, so clean water returns to your pool. Because it is the standard media for most filters in South Africa, it is also the most affordable way to keep your filter working properly.

How Pool Filter Sand Works

First, your pump pushes water into the top of the filter. Next, the water passes down through the sand, where the grains catch particles down to roughly 20–40 microns. The clean water then flows out through the laterals at the bottom and back to the pool. When the pressure gauge rises, you simply backwash to flush the trapped dirt out to waste.

How Much Pool Filter Sand Do I Need?

In South Africa, we usually describe filters by the number of 40kg bags they hold. For example, a 1-bag filter takes one bag, and a 3-bag filter takes three. Nevertheless, always check the label on your filter tank first.

When to Replace Your Sand

Over time, the grains gradually wear smooth and lose their ability to trap fine dirt. In most pools, you should replace the sand every 3–5 years. However, you may need to change it sooner if you notice these signs:

• The pressure climbs back up within days of backwashing.
• Similarly, the water stays cloudy even though your chemistry is correct.
• In addition, algae keeps coming back despite good chlorine levels.
• You can see channels or clumps in the sand through the filter lid.

Note: If sand appears on the pool floor, a lateral inside the filter has probably cracked. In that case, repair the lateral before you add new sand.
